She is the person people come to, and the reason is that she is not in a hurry with anybody.
That is the whole of her gift and she knows it. A woman came to her four years ago about something she had been carrying since she was a teenager, and what she said to that woman, in the first ten minutes, was: this took twenty years to build and we are not going to be finished by Christmas.
She has said versions of that sentence to about forty people. She means every word every time. She has watched what it does to somebody's face when they are given permission to take the time a thing actually takes.
And she has a thing of her own and it has been going on since she was twenty-six.
She is forty-four now.
And the terms she gives herself about it, which have never once been written down anywhere except in her own head, are roughly these: this should have been dealt with years ago, other people manage it, and every month it persists is further evidence about what kind of person she is.
She would not let anybody speak to somebody she loves that way for four seconds.
She noticed it properly in May. Somebody in that room said something about being hard on themselves, and she gave them the sentence about not being finished by Christmas, and heard it come out of her mouth, and knew, in the same instant, that she had never once said it to herself.
She did not say anything about that. She carried on, and it was a good session, and she thought about it in the car for a long time.

The yoke was never issued in two versions
Let me start by not turning your gift into a symptom, because there is a fashionable way of writing this that would.
You are not gentle with people because you are avoiding yourself. You are gentle with people because you are right about how long things take, and forty people have had a different decade because a woman sat in front of them and refused to hurry them. That is real ministry and it is not a compensation for anything.
Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as sympathy: what you have been handing out is what you were given, and there is not a second and harsher edition of it with your name on. That is not my kind reading of eighteen years, it is what stands written in Matthew, and the same Holy Spirit who carried that invitation was in the car with you in May.
Read what He offers and what He says about it.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.Matthew 11:29-30
I am gentle and humble in heart. He describes His own manner before He describes the load.
And then the load itself, in two words: easy, and light. That is His own account of what it is like to be under His authority and in His work.
So this is yours right now rather than pending some improvement: the terms you have been giving other people are His terms, and they were issued to you first, because the written word puts gentleness in His own character and the Spirit of God is the one who has been offering you the same yoke you have been describing to forty people.
Now let me name the second set of terms, because they are not from Him and it is worth being exact about where they did come from.
This should have been dealt with years ago. Who set that date?
Other people manage it. Which people, and how would you know, and what would you say to somebody who said that sentence in your room?
Every month it persists is evidence about what kind of person I am. You would put your cup down.
Not one of those three has an author you could name. They arrived somewhere in your twenties and they have been running since without ever once being read out loud, and things like that only survive in the dark.
What is written describes His yoke as easy and does not attach a separate clause for people who are good at helping others, and the Holy Spirit has never handed anybody a harsher version of what they hand out.
And the guard, so this cannot be misused: none of this says stop working at your own thing. Keep at it, with somebody, the way you would tell anybody to. What is being torn up is the schedule and the running verdict, not the work.
So give yourself the terms.
Not different ones, and nothing generous or special. The exact ones. The sentence you have said to forty people, said to the woman who says it, because what is written calls His yoke easy without a second edition and the Holy Spirit did not exempt you from the offer.
This took a long time to build and we are not going to be finished by Christmas.
You are permitted that today rather than after some threshold, because Scripture puts gentleness in Christ's own character and calls His yoke easy without issuing a second edition, and the Holy Spirit is not the author of the three sentences that have been running since your twenties.
And say them out loud, all three of them, in the car or wherever you do your thinking. Say them out loud and listen to them in your own voice, because you have never once heard them outside your own head and they will not survive it.
Then keep working at your own thing, with somebody, at the pace you would prescribe for anybody who came to you at forty-four with something they had carried since twenty-six.
Which is: as long as it takes, without a verdict attached, with somebody sitting in front of them refusing to hurry them.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a woman keeping herself to different terms. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.
- Second set of terms I wrote for myself, you are torn up. Jesus says His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and He never issued a harsher edition for whoever is doing the helping.
- Fear that every month this persists is evidence about what kind of person I am, get out, in the name of Jesus. Not one of those three sentences has an author I could name, and they have only survived because I never said them out loud.
- Jesus, You are gentle and humble in heart and You said so before You said anything about the load. I am saying my own sentence to myself this week, out loud, with my name in it: this took a long time to build and we are not going to be finished by Christmas.
