Nineteen Saved Posts

This message is for the nineteen saved posts about forgiveness and the sister you have not texted since March

There is a folder on her phone and it has nineteen things in it.

Some of them are articles. Two are podcast episodes she has listened to twice. One is a screenshot of a paragraph from a book she does not own, taken in a shop, and it is a genuinely good paragraph and she has read it about forty times.

They are all about forgiveness.

She started the folder in March, which is the same month she stopped texting her sister.

There is a reason and it is not a small one and nothing in this article is going to treat it as small. Something was said, at a difficult time, about their mother, and it was not the first time, and it landed on a place that was already bruised.

She has done the work on it. That is what the folder is. She knows about the difference between forgiving and reconciling. She knows forgiveness is not saying it did not matter. She knows the thing about drinking poison and expecting the other person to die, and she knows two better and more careful versions of that same thing.

She could teach this. Honestly, at this point, she could probably teach it well.

And on Tuesday she saved the nineteenth one, and while it was downloading she caught sight of the number, and something in her went very still.

Nineteen. Since March. To the same person, about the same thing, and her sister's last message is still sitting there unanswered five months later with a photograph of their mother's garden in it.

Nineteen Saved Posts

The nineteenth one is not going to say anything the first one did not

Let me be careful about the folder first, because there is a version of this article that is unfair to you and I am not going to write it.

Reading nineteen things about forgiveness is not avoidance dressed up. Some of it was genuine work. You have understood things you did not understand in March, and understanding matters, and the people who wrote those pieces did honest work so that somebody in your exact position would have language for it.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as a nudge: you already have everything you need, and you have had it since about the fourth one. That is not my brisk reading of a hard five months, it is what stands written in the first chapter of James, and the same Holy Spirit who carried that line is the one who made you go still on Tuesday while the nineteenth thing downloaded.

Read it, because James does not soften it and he is writing to people who liked being taught.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.James 1:22

And so deceive yourselves. That is the sharp end of it. Not that listening is worthless, but that listening produces a feeling of movement, and the feeling is convincing, and it is the exact feeling you have had nineteen times since March.

So this is yours right now rather than pending better preparation: you are equipped, and you have been for months, because the written word says the hearing was always meant to arrive at doing and the Spirit of God is the one who has been putting that stillness in you every time the number went up.

Now let me name the thing the folder is actually for, gently, because you half know it already.

Every article you save is a small act of taking the situation seriously. It keeps the matter alive. It lets you spend an evening on your sister without having to speak to your sister, and it produces something that feels a great deal like progress and costs nothing at all.

That is not wickedness. It is what a person does when the actual step is frightening.

And the step is frightening. Let us not pretend otherwise: what was said about your mother was said more than once, and sending a message opens the door to it being said again, and you have been protecting a bruise. That is not cowardice, that is an injury behaving normally.

But the written word says the doing is where the blessing sits, and the Holy Spirit does not hand out courage in advance of the step. He hands it out in it, which is why nineteen articles have not produced any.

And the guard, because it matters here more than almost anywhere: nothing in this says forgive and go back to being available for the same treatment. Forgiving is not a decision to be hurt again, and a short honest message is not a surrender of anything. What is written never asks anybody to hand themselves back over to be wounded, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to be foolish. He is asking you to send four sentences.

The breakthrough

So close the folder and send the message.

Not the right message. Not the one you have been composing since about article seven, that acknowledges everything and defends nothing and cannot possibly be misread. That message does not exist and you have been waiting for it for five months. Nothing written requires a perfect sentence before a person may move, and the Holy Spirit works through four plain lines sent badly.

Send four sentences. I saw the garden. It looks like she kept it. I have not been good at answering since March and that is on me. Can I ring you at the weekend.

You can do that today. It is already within reach rather than something to build up to, because Scripture says do what it says and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies what is needed inside the step rather than in front of it.

And here is what the folder is for now: after you send it. Because there will be an evening in the next fortnight when something is hard and you will want to know how to think about it, and those nineteen things will be worth every minute you gave them.

Study is not the enemy here. Study that has become the substitute is, and you have known which one you have got since Tuesday. What is written honors the one who hears, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns hearing into a message actually sent.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as somebody still gathering material. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Collection I have been building since March, you are closed. Scripture says do not merely listen and so deceive yourselves, and the nineteenth article was never going to tell me anything the first one did not.
  2. Fear that sending four sentences opens the door to it being said about my mother again, get out, in the name of Jesus. Forgiving was never a decision to be hurt again, and a short message surrenders nothing.
  3. Jesus, You put the blessing in the doing and You hand out the courage inside the step and not in front of it. The folder is closed, and I am sending four sentences today with no history in them.
