Four Days Deciding Whether It Counted

This message is for the night something took you apart in a room full of singing, and the four days afterwards you spent deciding whether it counted

She was the one who answered the questions.

Ten years of it. Second Tuesday of every month in somebody's front room, eleven people and a plate of biscuits, and every hard thing anybody brought came across the coffee table to her. She was good at it. She was patient with the man who asked the same question about suffering four different ways, and she never once made anybody feel stupid, and she had done the reading so that they would not have to.

Then in May somebody dragged her to a Tuesday night in a converted warehouse across town, and she went with her arms folded because she knew exactly what she thought about rooms like that.

Nine hundred people. A stage. Lights she had opinions about. She stood at the back near the fire door with her coat still on, and she had already decided what this was.

And an hour in, the band stopped.

Not a soft ending. The drummer put his sticks down and the guitars came off and nobody had planned it and the room kept singing. One line, over and over, nine hundred people and no instruments, and it was not tidy and it was not in tune at the edges, and it went on far longer than was comfortable.

And she came apart at the fire door with her coat still on.

She got to the car and sat in it for twenty minutes before she could drive.

And then she spent four days on it.

Was it the reverb in a room that size. Was it the fact she had not slept properly since March. Was it crowd effect, which she could have explained to anybody who asked, having read about it. By Friday she had a list of four possible causes and she had not thanked God once, and somewhere underneath the list was the thing she would not say, which was: it cannot have been Him, because if it were Him it would have arrived as an idea.

Four Days Deciding Whether It Counted

God put His own Spirit into a man to make beautiful things

Start with the ten years, because I am not going to take them off you.

Answering questions across a coffee table for a decade is real ministry, and the man who asked the same thing four ways got four patient answers and that mattered to him more than you know. Nobody here is telling you the reading was wasted or that thinking is the lesser way. If that is your gift, keep it.

But hear this, and hear it finished rather than offered: you are not somebody who got emotional at a concert. You have not been fooled by a room. That is not my flattering read of your Tuesday, it is what stands written into the book of Exodus, where God fills a craftsman with His own Spirit for the express purpose of making beautiful things, and the same Holy Spirit is the one who came at you through nine hundred untidy voices.

Go and look at how strange that passage is. The first person in Scripture said to be filled with the Spirit of God is not a prophet and not a king. He is an artist, and the job he is filled for is design work.

See, I have chosen Bezalel, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skill, to make artistic designs.Exodus 31:2-4

Sit in that for a second. The Spirit of God, given, for beauty. Not as a warm-up for the serious part. As the thing itself.

Which means this is yours, right now, without the four day inquiry: what happened at the fire door was not a category error. You were reached the way beauty reaches people, and the written word puts God's own Spirit at the source of beautiful making, so the Spirit who filled a craftsman to work gold is entirely capable of working a room.

Now hear the honest half, because I will not build this on a false quarrel. Feelings are not proof, and this site will never tell you they are. A moved heart is not a doctrine and it does not settle a question.

But it is not nothing either, and you have been treating it as nothing. The written word calls the works of His hands a proclamation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a proclamation land in a body, which is exactly what happened to yours.

There is a difference between saying "that was not an argument" and saying "that did not happen". You collapsed the two on the drive home, and you have been living in the collapse ever since.

You have been given a body that responds to glory. That is not a design fault to be audited, it is equipment, and Scripture hands you the psalm of a man under siege whose one request was to gaze at the beauty of the Lord, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been drawing you toward the gazing since you were small.

The breakthrough

So close the inquiry.

Four days is long enough to have established that you will not be able to reduce it, and the reduction was never the point. You were not asked to explain your own Tuesday. You were asked to receive what happened in it.

And this is already settled, not pending: God was in that room. Not because the production was good and not because your reasoning failed, but because the written word puts the Spirit of God at the origin of beautiful things and He has never signed an agreement to reach you only through your reading.

Go back. Not for the feeling, because chasing a feeling turns a gift into a slot machine and this house does not sell that. Go back and stand where you can hear it, and when the band stops and the room keeps going, stay. Do not narrate it to yourself while it is happening. Do not begin the audit at the fire door.

You are permitted to be moved. You always were, and the ten years of answering questions across a coffee table did not use up your permission. That permission is written into a Psalm where a hunted man asks for one thing and the one thing is to gaze, and the Holy Spirit has been holding the door of it open for you since May.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King rather than as somebody presenting findings. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Audit, you are closed. God filled a craftsman with His own Spirit to make beautiful things, so nine hundred voices with no instruments stops being evidence against itself in this house.
  2. Fear that it cannot have been Him because it did not arrive as an idea, get out, in the name of Jesus. The God who reached me at the fire door was not confused about which door He used.
  3. Jesus, You were in that room and I have spent four days deciding about it. I am not running the inquiry any more, and the next time the band stops I am staying where I am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
